Diesen Sommer drehe ich in Berlin, Hannover und Hamburg den Film "The Dreammakers". Es geht darin um James Simon und Albert Ballin, zwei historische Personen, die vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg viel für Deutschland getan haben. Meine Rolle, Albert Ballin, war ein Hamburger Reeder, der als Erfinder der Kreuzfahrten gilt:
Bei dem Filmprojekt handelt es sich um einen Dokumentarfilm mit einer angestrebten Länge von 50–60 Minuten. Der Film ist sowohl wissenschaftlich fundiert als auch emotional zugänglich – eine Verbindung, die historische Stoffe für ein breites Publikum relevant macht.
Gerade durch die Verbindung von historischer Inszenierung, Interview und Archiv wird Geschichte nicht nur erzählt, sondern erfahrbar gemacht.
Er wird in Zusammenarbeit mit der James Simon Stiftung in Berlin sowie den HAPAG-Lloyd Archiven in Hamburg umgesetzt.
Langfristig ist zudem eine begleitende Bildungs- und Kinotour-Auswertung in
Zusammenarbeit mit Museen, Gedenkorten und kulturellen Institutionen vorgesehen. Damit
soll der Film nicht nur als filmische Dokumentation, sondern als nachhaltiger Beitrag zur kulturellen Bildung und zur öffentlichen Debatte wirken.
This summer, I am filming *The Dreammakers* in Berlin, Hanover, and Hamburg. The film focuses on James Simon and Albert Ballin—two historical figures who contributed significantly to Germany before the Second World War. My character, Albert Ballin, was a Hamburg-based shipowner who is even credited with inventing the cruise ship:
The project is a documentary film with a target runtime of 50–60 minutes. It is both scientifically grounded and emotionally engaging—a combination that makes historical subject matter relevant to a broad audience. By blending historical reenactments, interviews, and archival material, the film does more than simply recount history; it makes it a tangible experience. It is being produced in collaboration with the James Simon Foundation in Berlin and the HAPAG-Lloyd archives in Hamburg. Long-term plans also include an accompanying educational and cinema tour, organized in partnership with museums, memorial sites, and cultural institutions. The aim is for the film to serve not merely as a documentary, but as a lasting contribution to cultural education and public discourse.
