The historical and action-packed drama film written by Antti J. Jokinen and Jorma Tommila is inspired by the Kalevala. The story of Kullervo stars Elias Salonen in the lead role, with Jussi Award-winning Eero Aho playing the other main role, Untamo. The cast also includes Ilkka Koivula (Wäinö), Olli Rahkonen (Ilmarinen), Krista Kosonen (Kerttu), Johannes Holopainen (Kalervo), Oona Airola (Marjatta), and Ronja Orasta (Aino).
The film deals with themes of mercy, the longing for a meaningful life, and self-discovery — as well as revenge, but also the love of one’s own family. Its backbone is formed by the Finnish nature, ancient tribal warfare, old myths, and Kalevala-inspired mythology.
