Joshua David Smits (1995) has built up a versatile practice as a performer and creator over the past few years. Joshua's fascination with sensuality and sexuality is central to his own work. He explores these themes through self-written texts, improvisation, and a rough, expressive playing style with a lot of humor. His love for pure play is always strongly evident, both in the performances he has created himself and in collaborations with other creators.
For his master's thesis, This is not a love song, which he created together with Fiene Zasada and Luca Persan, he explored his desire for a romantic relationship. Through a series of scenes inspired by pop culture and personal imagination, Joshua and Fiene showed how they want to love and be loved. From the jury report: “This is not a love song is high-quality but accessible theater. Intelligent but not intellectualistic. In every area—acting, dramaturgy, scenography—clear choices have been made that work.” The play was selected for Jong Werk at Theater Aan Zee in 2024. The same production earned them the Horlait-Dapsen Prize from the KASK Conservatory.

As an actor, he appeared in Queer Planet by Het Nationale Theater (NL) and Desire by Louis Janssens, for which he was selected for Theater Aan Zee and Het TheaterFestival in 2024, as well as receiving a nomination for best ensemble performance at the Acteursgilde awards. In 2025, he was in residence with Arend Peeters at Het Zuidelijk Toneel and the Makershuis in Tilburg, and in the fall of that same year, he appeared in Paperassen by Freek de Craecker and Femke Platteau. In addition to his theater work, Joshua is also active as a film and television actor.  In 2026, he will appear as jury member Frank in the third season of De Twaalf (VRT & RTBF).
